‘Your favourite song’
A Sorta Fairytale by Tori Amos
Not only is this impeccably written and performed, but it sums up what I love about music - the atmospheric way a song can take you into the musician’s world, their life, tell you a story and make you part of it. The lyrics are encapsulated in the melody, and I particularly love the piano part. Voice and instrument fuse perfectly. The Fairytale of the title encapsulates it all as Amos makes you part of the storytelling she’s weaving magically around you as you listen. It’s like being a child all over again and being spellbound, only so much better as her story means love and friendship and that feeling of being lost in a story or a song. Lost without any need for translation. This song never fails to pick me up, no matter how bad a day it’s been.
